Best way to play an iPod through your car stereo system

How to play an iPod in a car.

Have your whole music collection at your fingertips while driving with your iPod and your car stereo. Here are some ways you can listen to your iPod through your car stereo system.

Since driving with your iPod earbuds in is both dangerous and illegal in most states, you’ll want to use one of the following methods to listen to your tunes safely and through your car stereo system. You don’t have to spend a lot to get set up either.

Use a cassette adapter:

Originally designed to allow you to hook up a cd player to your car stereo, if you have a tape deck in your car stereo then you can use an adaptor. Just plug the cable end into your iPod headphone jack and pop the cassette end in the tape deck and you are ready.
Of course the audio quality won’t be the best, but this can be a cheap and easy way to play your MP3s over your old car stereo.

Use an FM transmitter:

These small devices are growing in popularity because they are easy to use, compact, and offer decent audio quality. You can purchase them in a wide range of electronics stores and they are even popping up in non-electronics stores as well.

They plug into the docking slot of your iPod and transmit a short range FM signal to your car stereo. All you have to do is plug it in to your iPod and tune your FM radio to the dial number indicated on the transmitter’s packaging. Some are powered by battery while others will be powered by your iPod. Some will plug into your cigarette lighter for power.

Use a direct connection:

As MP3 players have grown immensely in popularity, makers of car stereos have taken notice. Many new car stereos come with auxiliary (AUX) jacks on the front of the faceplate. Often these are displayed as direct connection inputs or simply headphone jacks.

If your stereo didn’t come with a male-male cable you can purchase one for a few dollars at any electronics store. The standard headphone jack is usually 3.5 mm so you’ll want a male-male direct audio cable with that size.

Some car makers and car stereo makers have even started to include iPod ready systems that are designed to work seamlessly with your iPod with the first use.

Use these options to connect your iPod to your car stereo system safely and easily. Never drive a vehicle with your iPod earbuds in as this is extremely dangerous and often illegal. You can do any of the above options as a low cost way to access all your MP3s while driving.

How I Found the Best iPod Earbuds Ever

Article by AJ Vanderhorst

All good things must come to an end, and that definitely includes the Apple earbuds originally packaged with my iPod. Those minimalistic white ‘buds got the job done. Although they never matched my black iPod very well, I was genuinely sorry to see them go. When they bit the dust after I spent a long summer hiking, running, and doing outdoor work, I think I might have actually cried–although it could have been sweat.

Clearly, however, it was time to reload. And I determined that this time around I would not only find earbuds for my iPod that meshed visually, I would also try and upgrade the sound quality. One problem: I had no money. Well, not literally, but in the broke-college-student sense of the phrase. If I shelled out 0 on earbuds, I would be eating noodles in a cup for the next month.

There were a few other complicating elements too, like the fact that I wanted the new ‘buds to do a better job blocking external sound, and I didn’t want them to fall out of my ears when I bent my head to one side to take a sip of coffee without sloshing it on my textbooks.

Where did that leave me? It left me with very high design and style demands and a budget that could barely lace up a pair of Chuck Taylors. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would be able to do better than another factory model pair. But I started looking around online, and stumbled across the V-MODA “Bass Freq” earbuds. They caught my eye because they came in designer colors. When I clicked around to read reviews and user comments, I experienced a buzzing sensation in my eardrums–was the return of quality iPod music about to happen?

Here’s what I discovered.

1. The V-MODA “Bass Freq” model had won some nice awards (CNET and MacWorld).

2. They apparently did a good job with noise cancellation, no batteries needed.

3. They came with those little rubber earbud cones in various sizes for adjustable fit.

4. The ‘buds got praised for their bass kick and crisp treble notes.

5. They were shipped in designer colors (red, orange, green, blue, black, silver, pink).

6. Best thing? They fell inside my humble price range.

Feeling pretty excited by now, I opened up my 17th credit card account (just kidding) and ordered a pair of the V-MODA earbuds. I opted for “tambarine orange”–not because I am a hippy, but because my black iPod has always wanted tiger stripes. About a week later, my package arrived from Amazon. After it sat on the couch for a week, I got around to opening it. Actually, I ripped it open in the elevator and was listening to Iron & Wine and Radiohead about two minutes later.

The kicker is, this little Christmas morning scene took place about 9 months ago. My original pair of “Bass Freq” ‘buds are still in use, and I’ve actually ordered four more, three of them for gifts. Why? Because, as promised, the bass notes rock and the middle and high notes come through splendidly. These earbuds perform better than the originals, and they’re definitely a notch higher in the style department.

Throw in the fact that they fit my small ears well and don’t constantly fall out, and you have a very happy penniless student. I feel very comfortable awarding these ‘buds the title of Best Earbuds for iPod Ever.

You know, Best Ever for less than . When I graduate, I’ll see what else V-MODA has on the market. Although, by the time that happens, no doubt I’ll have to update my iPod too.

AJ Vanderhorst is clearly a huge of fan of the “Best Ever” V-MODA earbuds. His thoughts about culture, photos, and, yes, the best earbuds for iPods, can be found at his blog, BitterSweetLife. Google it. icon smile How I Found the Best iPod Earbuds Ever
